COUNT DOWN

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on July 31, 2007 11:41 AM |

WHILE the stadium debate heads ominously towards the all-important poll, another battle is raging with more immediate concern.
It's the one we are fighting with one hand died behind our back.

So far we've had our arses kicked from pillar to post during this summer's transfer window.
We've been out-muscled by teams like Sunderland, Portsmouth and Wigan and turned down by equally uninspiring players, Kieran Richardson anyone?
Now Boro or Newcastle look more likely to land Alan Smith (whose agent is briefing in favour of a Goodison Move) and we could easily lose out on Leighton Baines (who also prefers Everton).
It will leave us going into the new season with just Jagielka and Pienaar added to the squad.
God knows what's happening with Johann Vogel.
Yes, we know the reasons why we are being outbid. Yes, we know Moyes still wants to add faces. Yes, we know he won't plunge us back into more debt.

But the season starts in less than two weeks and we're in four competitions with the same small squad.

I don't like the maths one bit.

But it's looking increasingly like we're going to have to trust in the ability and fitness of the players we have until January at least.

(I'll be keeping my fingers crossed though. They still haven't dished out the No10 shirt).

Erm Greg...

That an utter load of rubbish what you've written there.

All the best like, just stop spouting waffle.

Never a truer word has been spoken Micky. You should try listening to O'Keeffe's ramblings.
Anyway Greg, countdown is all one word and Baines (a boyhood Red no less) is on the verge of setting sail on the good ship Goodison.
So any chance of an update/apology?

we should go into debt - the whole world lives in the red these days, it'a way of life ... GAMBLE! just take a chance and see where it gets us, our history suggests it may pay off ...

Think you're the one waffling Micky. Yes, the stadium issue is important, but results are the critical thing, and having a slimline squad, with a worrying lack of players coming in, is a real cause for concern.
At the end of the day, you can play in the most palatial of surroundings, but if we've got a substandard squad, or an average quality of player, the writing could be on the wall, no matter if we're in Everton, or a few miles down the road in Kirkby.
Some good points Greg. All the best Mick.

Yes, Tony Barrett (the only one capable of it, seemingly - so have a word with Dom King) is right. Baines is a boyhhod red

Just why is it that every time EFC are connected with a local lad it must be reported that he's a "Boyhood Blue?"
And I have to laugh each time it appears that Hibbert's a "BB" (the lads in the Rose & Crown aka Wheatsheaf in Huyton Village have a good laugh at that one). Not that it matters anyway (witness Rush, Owen, Fowler, Carragher) but it does seem that we need to have it sugar-spun to us that he's a "BB". Recent wrong rumours have surrounded : Koumas (a BR); Jagielka (Man Utd - he only played for EFC youth); Nolan (not a red, not a blue - he's genuinely asexual); Hibbert (a BR); Baines (a BR).
We can sign "BRs" you know: Reid, Watson, Ablett, Harper etc - all of whom won honours with EFC.

I only said Baines prefers a move to Everton. Never suggested he was a BB.

Sorry Greg, I should have made it clearer that I was referring chiefly to Dom King's belief that LB is a BB.

And I should have made it clearer that TB likes BBWs.
