LESCOTT FOR ENGLAND, PART II

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on September 3, 2007 1:16 PM |

SO FINALLY, shorn of all other options and desperation kicking in, McLaren has come calling to Goodison.
Despite what I have written earlier, it was surely only a matter of time before Lescott got the call.

So while I’m pleased for him, I’m just hoping he doesn’t get injured.
Moyes has played the right game with Lescott i.e. touting him as an international sporadically but not kicking off when he wasn’t selected.
It was getting pathetic though when Sol Campbell and Nicky Shorey were getting a look-in first.
Let’s hope the days are gone for good when Goodison yelped for one of its own to play for England.
I’ll never forget Nick Barmby.

Below, McLaren states the bleeding obvious:
"Joleon has been looking very solid for Everton this season, and has also scored a couple of goals, too.
"He is big and strong and is a threat at set-pieces as well, but as a defender he makes life very difficult for strikers.
"His versatility also means he is a good option as he can play in the middle of the defence or at full-back.
"He came on as a sub for the 'B' team at Burnley in May and looked assured and I think he's very capable of making the step up to the full team."

Here’s what he might have said:

Joleon has been looking very solid for Everton this season and last, and has also scored a couple of goals, including one televised game which I attended.
This made it harder for me to ignore him, but not impossible.
"He is big and strong and is a threat at set-pieces as well, but as a defender he makes life very difficult for strikers.
“Still he’s no Nicky Shorey hey?
"His versatility also means he is a good option as he can play in the middle of the defence or at full-back.
“And after Jamie Carragher blanked my calls, I needed someone to play out of position regularly, give thankless tasks to and force to travel half way round the world to play two minutes or not at all.
"He came on as a sub for the 'B' team at Burnley in May and looked assured and I think he's very capable of making the step up to the full team."
“Any more injuries and I’ll be calling up Phil Jagielka....Actually......anyone got his number?”

I think Jags and Baines should also be in the squad.

Being a versatile defender is one thing, being brilliant at it is another. Could you see someone like Ferdinand being shoved over to left-back and being totally comfortable with it? Me neither.

John - I'll bell you on Friday about the game mate.

Terry - Agree totally about Ferdinand. I think as a complete defender Lescott has more potential. Trying to be optimisitic, maybe England will ehance his game even more.

Only a former public schoolboy could care so much about England!
Anyway, Lescott should be in the squad but don't belittle Nicky Shorey. He looked one of the most technically accomplished full backs in the Prem last season.
Still, don't suppose you could expect a former pupil of a rugby playing school to pick up things like that.

As usual Barrett and the facts enjoy a tenuous relationship at best. When was St Eddies ever a public school?

what exactly does 'technically accomplished' mean?

does being a good player mean you're automatically technically accomplished or do you have to throw in a bit of fancy footwork as well?

incientally, they always used to say the same thing about stuart copeland, drummer with the police.

Wasn't Lescott the guy with the little willy in The Full Monty? Had a few appearances with Del Boy and Rodney?
