NERVES

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on October 4, 2007 11:43 AM |

IT’S likely that tonight’s game could end up defining our season.
Win and we’ve got the group stages of the Uefa to add spice and magic to the weekly grind of trying to finish 6th in the Prem.
Lose and......well there’s the rub.

Losing could trigger the kind of post Villareal/Dynamo Bucharest fall-out which saw us wretchedly slump to 11th in the league.
While bowing out at such an early stage may not be quite as catastrophic this time around, it would still seem to make our league ambitions pointless.
Why slog out for a Uefa cup place when we can’t beat an unknown team half the world away?
Anyway, enough negativity. About 1,500 lads have made a superb effort to get over there and it’s be unthinkable for the blues not to respond to that.
We have got the team to beat Kharkiv without doubt.
I’d go for; Tim Howard, Baines, Lescott and Stubbs, then Neville (at right back where he should remain).
In the midfield it’s got to be Arteta (they’ll try and boot him off the pitch tonight), Pienaar (who looks like a Charlton Ladies player in some lights), Carsley and Jagielka.
Up front has to be McFadden (on form pure and simple) and Yakubu (big chance for him to silent the doubters and throw Johnson on with 20 minutes to go when it’s still 0-0. Or five minutes to go if you’re Moyes.)

Can anyone name a better starting XI?

PS - The Blues have got to do it tonight for John Mac who is in plaster after fracturing his leg playing for the Clock on Saturday. Keep your chin up mate, I’ll buy you a bevy later.

Dear George,
It says in your blurb you're a determined optimist. Do you think you could check my eyes out as I can only see shadows? The ones at Boots aren't very good. Although I do like their food section.

I think you are underestimating how well Everton can do in the league this season. I think fourth is a realistic target, with Spurs misfiring and Liverpool beginning to wobble, who knows? I think along with Villa, Newcastle and maybe Man City, there is going to be a much tighter race for the Champions League slots.

I disagree with you on Neville playing full back. His experience and game intelligence is being utilised sensibly by Moyes in midfield. He may not be dynamic like a Keane or a Gerrard, but he brings a stability and calming influence in there. I recall how he marked Gerrard out of the game at Anfield for United not so long ago. He is good at marking players out of the game, spoiling their tactics. Don't be surprised if he is instructed to do the same in up and coming Derby.

SOMETIMES THE WRITTEN WORD HAS A HABIT OF BITING YOU ON THE ARSE:
