DOWNING

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on December 18, 2007 9:29 AM |

WITH January on the horizon, the ever-beguiling transfer market rumour mill is grinding into action.
Hopefully if the Blues are going to be doing any business it will be quick, clinical and less surreal than during the summer.

Having said that, is anyone really worried about missing out on Jason Koumas, Alan Smith and Kieran Richardson now?
The strongest guess is that Moyes will move for midfield reinforcement, with our books looking more than healthy up front and at the back.
We could still do with a big, mobile grock to sit in the centre of the park and break up the play - as sadly the sublime Mr Carsley maybe on borrowed time.
Stephen Appiah is a perennial one and don't be surprised to see a few tabloids link us with Rafa's favourite piece of furniture Momo Sissoko. I’d prefer it if we swerved both.
More pertinently we are thought to be in the market for a left-sided midfielder, with Stewart Downing’s name being bandied about.
The Boro man ticks all the right boxes for me (and perhaps Moyes) being young, British, and dynamic. He has got a lovely left foot, underlined by his assist for Tuncay at the weekend.
The Boro fans would be fuming if we nicked him after stealing Yakubu too (I’m guessing they’ll retire their ‘what a waste of money’ chants now).
England star Downing also comes across as a quiet player who wouldn’t unsettle the presently thriving dressing room spirit and has already got European experience.
Perhaps the only doubt is whether Moyes would want to spend £8m on a player in January again after having his fingers singed with James Beattie.

I wouldn't object to two further Arsenal fringe players namely Diarra and Diaby.

Why are you not a fan of Appiah?
