RACISM

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on December 31, 2007 10:00 AM |

INTERESTING and depressing column from Laurence Westgaph in today’s ECHO p.12
Laurence, a passionate blue, tells how he stopped going the match because of racist abuse at Goodison in the 80s.

He points out that this abuse hasn’t been totally wiped out yet. Sadly he is right.
There were some disgraceful racist shouts at Arsenal’s Kolo Toure from the Gwladys on Saturday, near where my mate sits behind the goal, which went unpunished (or unheard) by stewards.
It’s a very hard one.
The Goodison stewards are people I think very highly of. They always have a smile and sense of humour doing their vital job with upmost professionalism.
Equally it must be difficult, in the heat of the moment, to identify who shouted what - and then to deal with it as tempers are flaring around them.
I just don’t want to hear racism at Goodison anymore. I’m sick of it. It is becoming less and less frequent and the club are making great strides.
The prominent ‘Everton Against Racism’ signs set out our agenda plainly and isolated outbursts of racism can happen at many grounds.
I do wonder though, as Laurence does, how the bigots feel about our best players being a mix of black men and foreigners.
I'd say their brains must be torn with the irony. If they had ones.

Here, here. I doubt these morons would put forward the same pathetic reponse when Anichebe, Yobo or Piennar has just thumped in a winner for us.

Sadly, there are many dense, empty-headed idiots who watch football, who, when wanting to express their anger, do so by resorting to the 'n' word, or other unsavoury references to race.

There will always be racism at football matches, no matter how hard clubs work to eradicate it. Sad but true.

What i object to is the lazy arsed ill-informed southern press who now again see fit to trot out the tiresome 'Everton are racist scum' attacks, as if no other club has experienced such problems.

Sure enough, the street end has its (dwindling) number of teenage dickheads who'll bravely scream a racist remark to impress their mates one minute, before chanting 'Feed the Yak' the next. The dim witted irony of it all is completely lost on them.

A dying breed they may be, but i fear they'll never completely go away.

To "Anonymous" - please accept this in the spirit intended.

Whilst I appreciate, and probably agree with your sentiments (to a degree - however I do feel the Gwladys Street patrons, as a total collective, are much-too-much the whipping boys of Evertonia), I just feel that to post an anti-racism message under a tag of anonymity is a bit of a cop out.

I well understand why some blog respondents, message-board correspondents and fanzine writers feel the need to post their views anonymously.

At the same time, though, I think some subjects are too important to be treated with a veil of secrecy (what's the worst that can happen? someone discovers you're an anti-racism Evertonian?).

And this is certainly one such subject.

As I said, "Anonymous", please accept this in the intended spirit.

It's not a personal attack. More of an observation.

You will find pockets of racists within every football ground. El Haj Diouf got some racist abuse at Anfield from his own fans.

Goodison Park certainly had a problem over the years, but I think things have improved, perhaps due to the increased numbers of black players at Everton.

One notable exception was during the Everton v Portsmouth match a few seasons ago when Yakubu came in for some flak from a fella behind me.

'F*** Off! You black b*****d,' he roared when Yakubu tumbled to the ground during a tackle.

Like a coward, I tut-tutted to the missus and did nothing. Those around me did the same, which almost condoned his behaviour. Difficult, isn't it?

Obviously, the irony is that the racist guy now cheers The Yak. Or does he?

Keep up the good work, Greg.
