WHEN THE GOALS DRY UP

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on February 21, 2008 12:03 PM |

FIRST up, apologies for the blogging absence. I’ve been a little bereft of inspiration this week.
I’m not exactly bursting with excitement about the game tonight, but it will be good to see Steven Pienaar hopefully bringing his brand of sexy footy back. (Even if he does look a bit like a teenage girl from Tokky. Credit to WSAG for that one).

The debate doing the rounds a bit of late concerns our very own cult-hero Tim Cahill (or Timmy Cahill. If you want to sound a bit gay).
It goes like this; he’s great because of his priceless goal-scoring knack - but - when the goals dry up he isn’t worth his place.
It’s been suggested that the Sydneysider is not a good enough passer, tackler or creator to hold his own in a 4-4-2.
And when he is played behind the striker, as often is the case this term, if he doesn’t score it’s a wasted spot for a proper goalscorer like Vaughan or AJ (...ish).
I can see both sides of this one. Sometimes it can be frustrating when he turns in one of those semi-anonymous performances.
But even this emerging brand of Cahill critics have got to concede that he never gives it away wastefully (Hello Phil Neville, obrigado Manny Fernandes) and he is never bad when he plays in a conventional mid.
If anything, he proved against Brann that he is improving his overall conventional game, and should bomb-on and have a shot more often.
Moyes is a loyal boss and has not given the slightest hint that Cahill’s place is under threat yet.
Rightly the gaffer will think back to the overhead kick away at Chelsea, last season’s derby, the crucial late winner against Sunderland a few years back to end a horror streak...
But with Piennar, Arteta, Osman and Carsley all looking like must-start-if-fits, and Vaughan increasingly the perfect foil for The Yak, it’d be timely if the banks burst on Tim’s dry spell soon.
What do you think?

Goals are probably Tim's only positive contribution to the side but his negative contribution to the opposition is often ignored...he gets amongst them, unsettles them and breaks them up. In short never under-estimate the amount of nasty niggly work he puts in.

With the benefit of being a day late and seeing the excellent show at city last night Cahill showed exactly what he is all about, could of easily had a goal or two but for city feilding eleven keepers.I do believe we have to be careful when judging players performances just because they are not involved in eyecatching moments does not mean a bad game. The one thing for sure Timmy always gives everything for the blues. Was last night a bit like a Kendall eighties performance? Was Hibbert pissed against Brann.
