TIM Cahill has copped a bit of criticism from the national press for his goal celebration on Sunday.
His emotionally-charged arms-crossed effort was a tribute to big brother Sean, currently doing six years for nearly blinding a fella in a scrap outside a Kent night club.
I did bits and pieces of reporting on the case when Sean flew to Sydney to try and dodge the British courts after his arrest.
It was a tough one; Cahill was one of my favourite players and word was that Sean is a nice guy who had simply lost his rag once, under provocation, with devastating consequences.
So it can’t be easy for Tim and his parents, along with younger brother Chris, knowing that Sean is inside for a good while.
It can’t be easy for the victim either, who lost partial sight in an eye and had to quit his job.
But I think it’s fair enough if Tim wants to show his solidarity with his brother through a goal celebration.
It might not strike some as particularly tasteful or appropriate, but I think the Aussie midfielder is entitled to do it.
After the game Tim said he was “proud” of Sean and I think he meant proud of how he is coping in nick.
If my brother went to jail for an assault, I wouldn’t disown him and I’d still want to support him any way I could.
I don’t think Tim will do it every time he scores, and imagine it was prompted by a mixture of his brother’s predicament and the end of his own goal drought.
Elsewhere, there’s a worrying lack of committal noises from Steven Pienaar about making his loan permanent in the summer.
I hope Pienaar is enjoying playing first team football at Everton and hope he sees us as a far stronger option than returning to the Bundesliga and lower-mid table Dortmund.
If he is holding out for a better offer, I wonder what would constitute one of those?
He isn’t in the Barcelona or Inter bracket just yet. Anyway, it’s probably just me being over-analytical.
I’m off to Florence tomorrow morning with Paddy Shennan and the infamous Tony Scott so I’ll post a few blogs with pics about how we get on.
Scotty’s final banner choice was ‘Liverpool F.C., The Swingers’ Club - they never know who their next partner will be’.
That was chosen after consideration for any vague abuse aimed at Tony ‘The Egg’ Barrett or a pun about the two best sides in Merseyside being Everton and Everton Ladies.
I prefer banners about us than digs at the RS, but they can be boss when they get it right (see below).
What does your banner say?

you quote the below:
'So it can’t be easy for Tim and his parents, along with younger brother Chris, knowing that Sean is inside for a good while.

i would suggest its a hell of a lot more 'can't be easy' for the bloke who has been left blinded, rather than parents of a criminal who has left his victim unable to see in one eye.
i have no sympathy for cahill or his family and friends.
