CRUNCH TIME

ANYONE else watch Fiorentina and Zenit underwhelm last night with a mixture of frustration and mild despair?
It’s that familiar old “what might have been..” melancholy (file alongside the King’s Dock and that chubby kid from Crocky).

And it’s a bit disheartening to see that, after a freakishly bad season, A.C. Milan look likely to be in the Uefa cup next season.
But the over-riding feeling I had watching the borefest at Ibrox was renewed confidence.
It reminded me how rampant, strong, and ultimately unlucky we were at Goodison against the talented Viola.
Now, after a nine day break and with Arteta and Leon back, I think we’ve got reason to be optimistic.
Yes, Villa come to Goodison on a wave of confidence which can only be generated by three thrashings on the bounce.
They’ve hit form, consistent fitness and goals just at the right time.
But this Everton side, the same team who were a pleasure to watch earlier this year, have one big performance left in them.
With (fingers crossed) a midfield featuring no full-backs and the Yak leading the line ahead of a tough and skilful five-man line, we should let Villa do the worrying.
As ever, the crowd will play its part too. If passes are going astray early doors (which let’s face it they probably will) we need to stay off their backs.
Goodison needs to step-up one last time this season on Sunday. It’d be impressive if we could match the Fiorentina atmosphere.
Do that, and we can be almost assured of more big nights against glamorous European opponents.
