NEW BOYS

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on April 16, 2008 10:01 AM |

AS OUR increasingly-stretched squad puff and wheeze to the finish line with very little left in their legs, thoughts naturally turn to the summer.
So although the season still has a crucial clutch of games yet to play, I’m wondering who we should try and bring in.

With that in mind, and little else to blog about besides the ongoing form-dip which I’m loathe to criticise because of an otherwise great season, here’s my list so far;
(N.B. This could all be academic if we don't finish fifth and Moyes gets a budget of about £8m.)

ledley.jpg
JOE LEDLEY: Yes, I know he’s flavour of the month on the back of one goal in the semi-final against Barnsley, but the 21-year-old Cardiff midfielder looks promising. Championship fans have been tipping him for a while, and he has youth and versatility on his side, with an eye for goal. Now for the cliche - Moyes, Cahill, Lescott, championship, bargain, great eye for (re-arrange as you will).

LUCHO GONZALEZ: With the match-fixing scandal over their heads and heavy fines looming, Porto may be set for one of their occasional fire-sales. Free-scoring Lucho will be first off the shelf - wouldn’t it be amazing if it was destination Goodison. File under stupidly optimistic.

WES BROWN: Increased competition at right-back, with players who can get forward and pass well, would be nice. Brown could be let go by the Mancs and is ridiculously experienced for a relatively young player. He would also keep Yobo and Lescott on their toes infinitely more than Anthony Gardener.

STEWART DOWNING: Feed the Yak and he will score? This Teesider will definitely do that, and we’re crying out for a pacy, proper left-winger. Downing was heavily linked with us in January and although his delivery can sometimes be 50/50, he has a useful habit of popping up with goals (Boro’s top scorer) and always seems to be making things happen.

KIM KALLSTROM: OK his supposed desire to join the blues was nothing more than a bemused and polite answer to a leading question, but there is no doubting the 24-year-old Lyon player’s class. Tipped to shine during Euro 08 he is another classy midfielder who would add to our talent pool.

valb.jpg
MATHIEU VALBUENA: The little French midfielder caught the eye with the winner when Marseilles stunned Liverpool with a 0-1 win at Anfield earlier this season. He is highly rated at Stade Velodrome and, while some grocks are our priority, if the Pienaar move goes west he may be worth a go.

juarez.jpg
EFRAIN JUAREZ VALDEZ: Barca’s Mexican starlet has been compared to Cesc Fabregas which is obviously praise indeed. And he could have to quit Camp Nou after a contract dispute which has already seen him linked with the blues.
As with Fabregas, he may decided that ‘highly-rated’ is rarely going to be enough to get you a game for Barca and it would be a real coup if Moyes could persuade him that his future lies with us.

LORIK CANA: Nicknamed ‘The Beast’ thee seems little doubt that the big Albanian would add much needed muscle and stature to the blues midfield. But the all-action Marseilles captain has also allegedly caught the attention of Arsenal, AC Milan and Real Madrid so this might have to be a bid and hope.

WHO do you reckon the blues should go for? Leave a comment and let me now.

How about that Bradley cat who plays for the USA.From the gossip looks like we're after him and he's a box to box midfielder type we're crying out for.

I'd like to see us make an audacious bid for Arshavin, who everyone agrees had a great game at Goodison for Zenit. His agent is always enticing bids from England... he is young and hungry for English footy so why not?
He is a full international with good experience.... would fit in nicely alongside Pienaar, Arteta, Cahill ( although is he too similar to Cahill?) and a.n. other.... and maybe with a bit of luck he would take the corner and free kick responsibilities off Arteta!?!

Anthony Gardner... make his move permanent, he's been a revelation... we could loan him out to Everton Tigers in the close season to keep his fitness up.

Swap Anichebe for Nugent.

Go for Sidwell.

Make a cheeky bid for kronkjar from Pompey who are in £23m debt.

You still sessin about Lucho? What was it last summer, you'll walk naked into the Taxi Club if we sign him? I'm a Bullard man, myself, despite his age but all the signs are that he'll finally join the Irons to see his days out if Fulham go down (he's a Newham boy). Got a great attitude.
I have no idea about my own opinion on Downing any longer. I've turned my head Exorcist style about him so many times "he's crap, decent, gash, quality". Also can't see Aliadiere staying up there another season longer. He could do a job.

I'm assuming, though, that the Bentleys and Barrys of this world are Sky Four bound.

Kranckjar is a great shout.... get him in.... he would add some much needed height and goal threat from midfield, plus he's proven he can cope with the premiership and is gettin better and better.
As for the 23million debt, I imagine we are much more in debt than that.... but whats new, get him in anyway.

Greg - maybe you're right.
I should move on from Lucho but I bought that one hook, line and sinker.
I even did 10 press-ups every night for a whole week before transfer deadline day just in case my Taxi club outburst came home to roost.
I think Bullard is OK but (condescending tone) 'Not the type of player' we should be looking at now.

Unfortunately I think Barry and Bentley are, as you say, RS and Chelsea/Arsenal bound.

I should have added to my list;

ARSHAVIN,
MICHAEL BRADLEY,
JI-SUNG PARK,
JUSTIN HOYTE,
GIOVANI DOS SANTOS.

Get sniffing onto Park from Man Utd. Proper good I tell thee.
Skill, pace, tricks, great tea player, right attitude. Probably available at £6m. A steal that. I tell thee, get sniffing.
These Premiership players who are happy to play one in four games when they would be starting at other clubs. Madness.
They should all get on the sniff. Nostrils out, inhale it. Sniff out pursuing a career that involves playing football, not watching others play.
Park, he's got it all in that locker of his.

Towen wrote...

it all depends doesn't it?

Clinch european spot: bring in some real top international quality in the midfield.

fail to clinch european spot: go bin dipping in the lower leagues for a 'highly rated young midfielder' who'll turn out to be gash. we got lucky with cahill and lescott, you don't get gems like that very often.

i'd quite like us to go for Diarra or Sidwell.

does anyone even know what michael bradley looks like?

Kieran Mosses wrote...

We need some guile and fight in the team. We need a quality right back as Hibbert is a joke! he CANNOT cross a ball to save his life and, with the fast pace of the Premiership you need wing backs who can get up and down the line. (as Lescott does so well).
Furthermore Phil Neville has been incredibly poor these past few weeks. Captains are meant to stand up and be counted in times of hardship, so maybe ship him out?
Manny Fernandes is a good option as he has looked to be the only person with any creative flair in recent weeks.
Finally in response to Flavio's comment about swapping Anichebe for Nugent, has he watched Nugent this season as i haven't either coz he has never played.
