PLAN B OR NO PLAN B

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on June 25, 2008 12:04 PM |

JUDGING by the unbelievable response to the last blog about the fast-approaching Kirkby decision it’s not just me pondering the practical consequences if it doesn’t happen.
Everton are claiming this summer’s transfer kitty is intrinsically linked to whether Kirkby gets the go-ahead.

So, the unpalatable conclusion is that if Kirkby is either delayed or halted by Government call-in, David Moyes won’t be going to Tesco for his summer recruits, he’ll be going to Netto.

By my reckoning the Ginger General (not really working as a nickname that is it..) will have about £10-12m to spend - a mixture of money from league placing, Sky and the Jimmy Mac transfer.

What irks me is that this shouldn’t be the case.
The stadium should have nothing to do with Moyes’ budget. To say it does smacks of the infamous 'No Plan B'.
It’s not like Kirkby was ever going to come down to anything other than a yes or no. So why should our immediate team building suffer as a consequence?
Won’t it just be another case of utterly failing to capitalise on a season of improvement?
For us to progress Moyes needs to be able to spend about £8m alone on a holding player, that’s before he gets in his new No 2, a stand-in keeper and potentially a winger.
Oh and that’s all after he has put pen to paper on a new contract.
I’m not ranting from a position of ignorance regarding the ultra-harsh trading conditions out there at the moment.
I know we still have a sizeable albatross of debt and borrowing to buy the five players we need will be tough.
Equally I know the likes of Bill Kenwright and Keith Wyness will have been trying to scrape together a budget to appease their ambitious manager.
But I resent any implication that this budget should tie-in with the ground move. Moyes was always going to want to spend this summer.
Across the park Benitez is still getting the funds for Dossena and Barry despite the credit crunch and wrangling over the new Anfield.
We can’t afford not to keep up. But it’s looking worryingly like, in the real world, we simply can’t afford to keep up either.

I agree completely, regardless of feelings about the Kirkby proposal, it should have no bearing on our present teams progress. To do so not only puts a heavy and potentially disastrous burden on our present set-up it also reeks of a carefully constructed move to force the fans into accepting the kikby project.
Not only that but it also puts the future of our club with regards to what goes on on the pitch out of our hands. It is of grave concern if the desires of the backroom has left the football teetering on the edge oft her abyss.

Greg could provide a link to the above

Disappointed with this effort Greg. It's no different to Nick Smith's suggestion in the Post yesterday that No Kirkby = No money for Moyes.

Keith Wyness and Ian Ross have both said in the past that Moyes' stadium relocation costs will not infringe upon the transfer budget.

Earlier this week Ian Ross said that the players are priority over the stadium yet this hasn't reached the local press or it has and they're choosing to overlook it.

Now... the local press are stating the exact opposite.

Those behind BCR Sports (Earl and Green) are going to cut lines of credit accessible to Kenwright. That is the only reason that Everton will have less transfer funds, any other reason simply does not make sense especially when you consider that the money earmarked for the stadium will be freed up and in theory become available to Moyes to spend.

Jon Woods is neither use nor ornament.

The simple solution is get Kenwright out of the club. In 2004 billionaire and Evertonian Lord Grantchester joined a consortium to buy Kenwright out but it was rejected. We know there are people wanting to buy the club but Kenwright is holding us back.

I agree with the above comment with regards to potential buyers (fingers are crossed of course!) however to be fair to Greg (with regards his article) Everton themselves were making noises about effecting the short term transfer funds available. Also Ian Ross's statement about players more important than ground is tucked away in a subscription only property website. Hardly a loud and clear statement.

I want to now what has happened to the rumours mentioned in various sources about potential (Russian?) buyers talking over/investing? I think that no matter what anyone believes about potential investors if Kirkby doesnt go through then Kenwright will have to sell as he will have no other option.

Basically, a new ground is kenwright and wyness's solution to Everton's lack of financial clout. However, kirkby is the only site that they can afford (due to tesco help - we all know it by now!). Therefore short of winning the lottery it is hard to see what they can do, if they can't afford to go to another site. Don't forget that other sites were knocked back because they didn't offer the same financial package that DK does IE They didn't offer the same financial support for everton. That's in no way criticism - just statement of fact.

All this talk of "redeveloping goodison" might just be an admission of the above and kenwright saying he will look to sell if there is no kirkby. Perhaps the "there is no plan B" talk was right but right in terms of kenwright's reign?

I have no axe to grind with Kenwright and think he has done a lot of good for everton mainly keeping moyes at the helm. We should remember that by hook or by crook he has found money to buy the players moyes earmarked to assemble an excellent young squad and in football terms we have made the best progress in the best possible way we could've realistically hoped for.

Having said all that we need money to build on what is happening and keep moyes at the club, if Kenwright has run out of financial avenues & there are no people wanting to put money in then Kenwright should do the decent thing - I know it will be hard for him and I think retaining him in some capacity on the board would also be good because he is 100% evertonian and that is only a good thing to have on the board these days.

Kirkby will be accepted now, and he will stay and put millions in - nailed on!

Kenwrong wont sell unless at a profit, i strongly suspect Gregg and Granchester have made a new offer, but no matter what the profit margin he wont sell to those 2, i reckon moyes would have been sacked had they taken control in 2004 however.

anyway the long and short of it, Apparently Robert Earl wants to Build a Casino and Phillip Green wants to Build a BHS at Kirkby, no kirkby no money basically

This is just another example of the Board and its scaremongering a la 'No Plan B'... surely the only way the transfer kitty will realistically be affected is if in fact Kirkby DOES go through and Bully & Billy have to dust off their wallets to cough up the club's contribution to building the bluddie thing>!!

Having said all that Ian Ross has come out this week and said "This is completely untrue", so it must be completely untrue, right?? - I mean we all know what a stand-up kind of bloke Father Ross is! Plus it was on the official site and everything so must be right. Hmm!
