AJ - DOES HE, DOESN'T HE?

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on July 24, 2008 9:07 AM |

ANOTHER surreal day in a typically Everton summer of transfer verbosity.
First the ECHO report that a deal is on the verge of being struck with Fulham and that AJ wants out.
Then the club deny any such offer has even been made by the Londoners, let alone a £10.5m deal struck. So far, so confusing...

aj.jpg
The ECHO's story was perfectly in line with the rest of the national media, so either 12 reporters have all made the same mistake or there's something fishy going on.
I suspect it's the later.
All I've ever heard from someone who know Andy Johnson well is that he wants to stay at Everton.
He is settled in the North-West with his wife and his kids are happy at school here.
Soon after the season finished he became aware the he may well be sacrificed in the summer to fund moves for other players.
So much so that when he returned from holiday, he was asking friends if the press had been reporting transfer gossip about him leaving.
Eventually it was communicated to him that Everton would listen to offers.
Now on Tuesday. The nationals report that AJ left Deepdale saying he wasn't "in the right frame of mind to play". Cue forums and message boards awash with people questioning his attitude and condemning the player.
Look at it this way though. How would you feel if you'd already been told privately by your boss that he would let you leave and then you see reports in the press about a £10.5m move being on the brink, while you are totally in the dark?
Andrew Johnson left Deepdale in a taxi on Tuesday as confused as everyone else about this transfer.
It may well be that we need to sell him in order to strengthen elsewhere and David Moyes cannot be criticised for that.
I believe that £10.5m is good business for a player who, although effective and with some very good qualities, often lets himself down in front of goal.
However his attitude and commitment have never been in doubt. Johnson was benched for large parts of last season but always gave his best when returned to the side.
He even bounced back psychologically from the horror-show of scoring one - then missing two penalties in front of the Street end against Metalist.
So if the inevitable deal goes through - be it Fulham, Wigan or anyone else - it's unfair if the brickbats come out.
Johnson will have been sold for the sake of expediency, and there's not much he could have done about it.
We should wish him well and hope the money is spent wisely on midfield and striking replacements.

P.S.
Oliver Kay at The Times seems to believe we would suddenly have big bucks should AJ go. I wish I knew his source or had his optimism...

Everton have yet to make a significant foray into the transfer market this summer, Moyes scrutinising his targets as carefully as ever, but the sale of Johnson would leave them with between £25million and £30million to invest. A new centre forward - such as Darren Bent, of Tottenham Hotspur, or Diego Milito, of Real Zaragoza - is a priority, but Moyes has also been alerted to the availability of João Moutinho, the outstanding Portugal midfield player. Sporting Lisbon would demand up to £18million for Moutinho, 21, but Everton would consider such a deal only if it could be structured in a way that spread the payments over 12 months or more.

Seems inevitable that he will go now. I'd take the £10.5m for him it is good business. Signing him to a five year deal, recently confirming he is not for sale then offloading him? Not the treatment you would expect is it? Just what is going behind the scenes with the ground fiasco, moyes contract, transfer kitty etc...who knows?!

Completely agree with the points raised, he always gave his best but often in a 1 on 1 situation you just didn't fancy him to score as his finishing did let him down at times.

He gave us some great moments v Liverpool, Arsenal and in Europe but to me he seemed to have lost that bit of pace and the ability to leave a man dead and then go on to score...which he always looked capable of doing in his first season with us.

The club are setting AJ up to be the fall guy. My theory is Moyes needs a transfer budget and there's no way the board can provide one without selling existing assets.

I'd have a lot more respect for those involved if they would just admit they want to sell him because they can't raise money elsewhere for the benefit of the team rather than use underhand tactics and try to brandish players as villains when it suits them.

The Echo have been the club's mouthpiece for too long, get wise.

Greg,

I saw AJ leave on Tuesday night as he came out of the new stand at Deepdale, wearing his tracksuit and a blue Everton wooly hat.

I looked him in the eye and he looked me in the eye. He didn't seem the happy self I've seen at Goodison, and seemed nervous of the fact of being "stopped for a chat", desperate to get out of Preston.....

Now one thing stays with me from this.

AJ is not a Rooney. That Judas was only after money - which the settlement out of court and Strettford's recent ban has shown.

I'm not too sure if this is our clubs finest hour.

I'm not sure if this is endemic to just our club. It seems to be the way football, the sport we all love has gone.

But seeing AJ's face coming out. I'm not a particuarly happy chappy myself right now about this....

Not that I blame anyone particular. I back Moyes 150% - he's the boss - and needs to be respected.

But I do have a feeling that this could have been handled - a little bit better....

Mark,

I agree with you on all points. He was obviosuly all over the shop when you saw him leaving Deepdale. He's normally v friendly.

The whole thing is very distatseful and unfair.

That wasn't me having a dig at Moyes either.

We can only speculate what's going on in the hierarchy at Everton.

It just seems very different to the trademark "Team" Moyes has kept for 6 years.

Like I said - I'm absolving David Moyes of any blame whatsover. I've heard stories from former players like Kevin Campbell who have nothing but excellent things to say about David Moyes, extending their careers and the like.

Its all very odd. And as the writers on www.bluekipper.com are saying:
"what is going on?" !!!!!

I know their trying to make things easier by getting the fans to turn on AJ, But he's not one to make "I want out" stories or Negative Rumblings,

One Player isn't bigger than the club but when the club is turning on a nice guy, it's a twisted reality really.

If's He's Still here Big Chants For AJ At PSV i say.

It seems to have been obvious that the gross mismanagement of the club at the very top has left us in the unbelievable situation where we need to sell in order to buy. A team that has finished fifth, twice in successive seasons, with a perfectly reasonable payroll should not be in this position. Sadly, AJ is the one to be sacrificed and when you consider that the club had him sign a five year deal so recently, just makes it even more laughable. Manipulating the fans by saying that nobody wants AJ to leave and trying to make it look like AJ was the one initiating the unrest, makes me trust the hierarchy at Goodison even less than I already did.

It's time that Kenwright stopped this pathetic line of "I've looked for investors but there's nobody out there". Forget investment, it's a sale - lock, stock and barrel - to somebody with the financial clout to compete in the Premiership that's necessary.

The whole thing is a typical Everton shambles, why sell Johnson at all ? I'd rather him than Bent. Somebody needs to tell us whats going on after months of speculating who we're going to sign, Moyes, Kenright and Bully show us what they've been doing all Summer by giving Pip a 4 year (yes 4 !!!) deal. Evertons self-proclaimed mouthpiece thought long and hard for half a second before signing....... unbelievable.
Oh I almost forgot they also decided to give Van Der Useless the Number 7 shirt !!! ......... gawd 'elp us all.

To all intents and purposes it now looks very likely that AJ is going to leave. Staying at home for the Forest game and leaving Deepdale for not being in the right frame of mind does send the starkest message yet that he is not happy to be a bit part player for EFC and rightly so if he stills harbours England ambitions....

However with that in mind the point needs to be raised now that with less than 3 weeks until the curtain raiser why replacements have not been drafted in? Plenty of rumours have surfaced even as far back as May with Michael Bradley being touted as a possible, all the way through to present day and Moutinho. Not even a typical Moyes loan signing has been made yet and now the summer is looking very bleak esp with all the injuries mounting up and players leaving. I am of the opinion that if AJ wants to leave, let him. We obviously need the funds but they need to be put to use in the correct areas

By selling AJ,the funds would be used to sign Moutinho although SPorting have said that he isnt for sale.

What then? Funds raised by selling a striker to pay for essentially an attacking midfielder when a holding midfield general is needed. A right back isnt "as" essential as a holding player, and then a replacement for AJ, however 4-5-1 does look on the cards so as long as Vaughny, Victor and Cahill stay fit, do we need another high profile player to sit on the bench?

On the positive side is the emergence of the likes of Jose Baxter and Jack Rodwell et al. This kinda takes the pressure off an already threadbare squad, hopefully all the young lads will put in a shift at some point in the season, used sparingly from what we've seen so far they could do alright.

Like most I just want the best for the club, but I also want success and the only way to build on last year is to enhance what we have already. Parading the skippers new 4 year deal isnt going to appease this view nor the signing of the highly reverred new assistant gaffer.

5 or 6 players was the number touted by DM, he will do well now to get half that by the Blackburn game. However onwards and upwards, and with much optimism, well some optimism.

Greg,
What do you think about this being published in the Echo? It's at odds with your own theory.

*Why Andrew Johnson could live to regret leaving Everton*

Jul 26 2008 by Dominic King, Liverpool Echo

AS has been the case all summer, one transfer story has dominated matters at Goodison Park, namely the future of Andrew Johnson.

After weeks of speculation and conjecture, things came to something of a head in midweek when Johnson withdrew from the team to face Preston North End after a concrete bid of £10.5m was lodged for his services.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if everyone could live by it, we would never make mistakes and always choose the right option. That’s why Johnson has been left to rue and regret his decision to leave Deepdale at a time when he was needed.

For some reason, though, his wires became scrambled and while he has no doubt apologised for his actions – Johnson is not an arrogant or malicious character by any stretch of the imagination – he can’t change the fact that he upset a lot of people.

Not surprisingly, manager David Moyes was – to put it mildly – furious and that is why it will not be the greatest shock if the transfer is dragged out.

You don’t need to be a genius to work out the logic. If someone messes you around in life, why should you help them?

But Everton Chief Executive Keith Wyness insists no such deal has been agreed.

He told evertonfc.com: "Contrary to some media reports that have surfaced throughout the course of today, the Club can confirm that no offer has been received nor has any deal been agreed for Andrew Johnson with Fulham Football Club."

As G'OK knows PR pays for my bread n butter, not to mention my lipgloss - but this isnt PR, this is just blatant lying!

Saying this then saying Moutinho is in the bag or whatever. What a gobsh*te!

The transfer window is a war zone and, as we know, truth is always the first casualty.

I don't think fans should or will turn on Johnson. He's seems like a genuine guy.

It is unfortunate that he's become snared in the increasingly sleazy world of transfers.

The press (that's you Greg that is) are to blame for some of the frenzy but it is the directors, managers, agents and sometimes players themselves (although perhaps not in Johnson's case) who feed the press. Then they cry foul when things go wrong.

Let's go back to the good old days when sportsdesks were given a hour's notice of 'a signing being announced' at a press conference over a cup of tea and a garibaldi.
