RUMOURS of Everton's interest in Portuguese Joao Moutinho don't quite ring true with me.
His valuation, for a start, has got to be a sticking point. I'd say Sporting would be very unlikely to sell for less than £10m, and why should they? He's their 21-year-old highly rated captain who plays for the national side.

Is it likely we've got the funds to be paying double figures for someone like Moutinho?
As our manager quite rightly points out - we need five or six players this summer.
Whenever David Moyes spends big it has largely been for tried and tested Premier League players...Beattie, AJ, The Yak.
He simply can't afford to take gambles on inexperienced, tournament-hyped players (unlike for example, Spurs).
I still think he feels the burning sensation in his fingers from the Per Kroldrup debacle quite keenly.
So let's take Moutinho with a pinch of salt. Just like Huddlestone, Michael Johnson, Arshavin, et al.
Even if AJ goes to Wigan for the remarkable sum of £10m we're unlikely to invest it all in a young player who although promsing is similar to other footballers already on our books.
I'd like to be proved wrong on this but it seems more likely we'll re-invest the potential AJ money on another striker and a more reasonably priced midfielder, possibly M'Bia.
As we all know, it's stature in the holding position which is our cast-iron number one priority before the window closes.
Finally apologies for the sparse posting. I've been away in Berlin last week and only back in work today.
It meant I missed the furore over Peter Kilfoyle's letter about the Kirkby Project. Feel free to leave your opinions on that and I'll get them posted.
I'm almost sick of talking about it until we know the Government's decision.

Would be great to get Moutinho, but as said highly unlikely.
It doesnt help all our optimism with Keith 'Bully' Wyness stating that his capture is 'highly possible' when indeed it is probably quite the opposite!
However if Bully is saying that, then maybe it means we do have a fair bit of wonga in the transfer kitty, which begs the question why have we not gone in for a young classy Englishman by the name of David Bentley instead!?
Unlike Moutinho, Bentley is just a good bid away from capture.
He would be a fantastic signing, and in regard to the touted £17m price tag- he'll be worth more than that after a single season!
Wouldnt it be great if we got both! I can but hope!!!!

We need a reserve keeper, right back, replacements for carsley, fernandes and gravesen and a striker as a minimum (so that is 6 bodies) which doesn't leave us in any better situation than last season (you'd think we would need an even bigger squad than last year given our good run in Europe, final position in the league and the fact that it was small last year already!).

We have injuries to hibbert, baines, cahill, arteta and vaughan. Players such as piennar, anichbe, cahill, yakubu and yobo are likely to be called up for internationals on the other side of the world at times when we really need them. This leaves us desperately short of numbers and it really concerns me that we haven't signed anyone yet (apart from Steve Round).

Can I see us spending £16m on Moutinho when we need 6 quality players just to keep the squad size the same as last season? Not a chance! Same with Darren Bent - as if we could afford his wages! He is one of the highest paid players in the Prem isn't he? Spurs have money to burn, we don't.

All we have to look forward to at the moment is the half time scouse pies as big as yer face (which will probably have gone up in price massively aswell).

Come on Moyes, we need some exciting players signed on to give us some hope for next season...and remember, nil satis nisi optimum (so don't sign Darren Fletcher cheers!).

Its all very well saying we need some exciting players but who are we realistically going to sign, or more to the point who will sign for us. We dont pay stupid wages and unfortunately that is a moot point in this day and age for premier league footballers.

Phil Neville said on Sky news today that we do need a better calibre of player to take us to the next level and i agree with him as I am sure do most of us; however rather than dwell over players a la Arshavin and possibly Moutinho why not bite the bullet and take a chance, before their price trebles or a big 4 team come in for them. Who are they gonna sign for then.

A mate of mine who is a RS fan said that what Everton need is a world class player to take a chance on us and then more will follow, hopefully !

Was confident this was gonna be the week but alas its not looking that way now. What irks me is West Ham looking at that lad Behrami, we werent even rumoured to be interested and thats what is most worrying, the lack of reported interest. Nobody has really made a move yet though so that I suppose is the one saving grace. Oh and the performance of Jose Baxter tonight, could be a young star in the making there.

Left out of squad at Preston for no apparent reason AJ has been strongly linked to Fulham, depending on your choice of tabloid the fee is between 10 and 11 million. I dont really know how to feel on this one if tis actually true and by all accounts it could well be.

On the one hand 20 goals in 74 games for an out and out striker isnt a good return in anyones book. So 11 million for him would be good business as long as its invested wisely.

On the other hand 11million for an out of form striker is a lot of money and could feasibly fund other deals, possibly Moutinho, which leads me to the point of being skint again, why are we selling our so called "better" players to "lesser" clubs if we're not skint?

Whatever the reason, I feel that like Beattie before him that we never got the best out of AJ, save a brace vs the RS, for which he will be always remembered at GP, likewise the brace of penalties missed in the UEFA cup!! He always gave his all and ran his bollox off, by doing so could change a game none more memorable than v Pompey at home. Good bet already would be for AJ to net the winner last game of the season when we travel to Fulham for our annual 1-0 defeat.
