WYNESS OUT

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on July 30, 2008 12:59 PM |

IT'S FRUSTRATING trying to figure out the inner machinations of something you care about, especially when it's something as complex and dense as Everton F.C.
There is clearly an awful lot happening behind the scenes currently, but those of us on the outside; fans, journalists, people in both camps, are left guessing in the dark
.

wynessout.jpg

Keith Wyness' departure is another example of the predicament.
Yesterday, the club denied he had left, despite the decision apparently being made late on Sunday.
They finally put a brief statement on the official website late last night.
Meanwhile, swirling about in a fog of intrigue is the Andrew Johnson transfer. Wyness was clearly not involved in the deal - yet was allowed to make himself look stupid by pouring cold water over newspaper reports.
How did that happen? What state are internal communications at the club? Did nobody who WAS involved in the negotiations with Fulham (Bill?) think to have a word in Wyness' ear before the official website carried a denial?
Or is it a case of two vital members of Everton's board working in far from splendid isolation, with communication sparse.
Meanwhile, despite assurances it will be any day now, Moyes' contract remains unsigned. Again on the official website the Scot's carefully phrased words from a press conference across the Atlantic... "Hopefully in the next week or so I will get it (the new contract) tied down and get it done.
"I want the best for Everton and I do not want to let the players down.
"I have told them that there will be more players coming to help them along the way. I want to make sure that is done before anything else.
"That is more important to me just now. But it is very close."
Heartening words certainly. But what Moyes is really saying, not for the first time, is show me the money. He will commit his future when he has proof that the club can back his ambition with signings.
Hopefully this will be academic when a big move for Moutinho is wrapped up, along with Topal to play in the hole and a striker to replace AJ.
Underpinning all this uncertainty is the imminent (although it's been imminent for a fortnight) decision from the Government on Kirkby.
Obvious questions stand out. Why would Wyness, the man credited with being Project Kirkby's driving force, quit at such a crucial stage?
Is it, as some believe, tied in with David Moyes' demand for transfer fees? Many believe Moyes' wants transfer funds to build ambitiously regardless of saving a bit (£78m) for Kirkby.
But Wyness is cast as the one who tried to tie the purse-strings...balancing cash for the stadium with cash for the first team.
Did that clash build to a head and result in Kenwright making a choice? Back his ambitious, proven-winner manager or back his chief executive's vision for a new home?
Do today's developments prove that Bill made his choice? If so I applaud him.
But then I could be clapping beside the docks as the Titanic sails off on its maiden voyage, because further rumours suggest Wyness' deputy Robert Elstone could jump ship next.
Surely the club's main financial man quitting would have echoes of Trevor Birch's exit stage left after hastily scrutinising our, ahem, complex books....
The fog could disappear if we got a bit of transparency from Everton F.C. but I'm not holding my breath.
The club may well have its reasons, public bickering at boardroom level is surely for our American-owned friends across the park, but it would be nice to have a few questions answered.

Surely there's no coincidence that Moyesy has come out and said he will be signing his new contract within the week on the same day Bully has exited stage right?!!

I think you've hit it on the head GO'K and it’s been Kirkby vs Transfers. Apparently Bully has some kind of mental thing about moving as he tried to move Aberdeen to some green belt land (called in by the planners) and is now (allegedly) off to Real Mallorca to push through a ground move to the mainland. Let's hope he knows the Spanish for Tescos...

Anyway, hopefully this means we have now have a cool £78m (Billy's 12 loans) in our transfer pot, plus the 12 for AJ and the 6 for Faddy we still haven’t spent yet!

And hopefully Moyesy won’t be distracted by all this and just ploughs on with his transfers. I actually think we should be the first prem club to go without a CEO – it’s not like he actually did anything is it?! – Everton The People’s Republic Club

You know first hand what happened (the club lied to him) and the Echo still writes positive spin.

When are the sports team going to acknowledge in print that Philip Green is involved?

give it a rest anonymous.

you spout all this stuff, hiding behind your 'anonymous' tag, like you're in the know.

its very easy to have a go at media organisations and shout your mouth off whith your own accusations and theories.

lets have your sources, on the table, if you have any.

and if and when you're wrong, can we all post a lot of 'ha ha ha ha' posts and laugh at you a lot?

Anonymous can only be Bully or Bully's Mom....

So what if Philip Green is involved? If I had millions invested in an organisation and some d*ckhead CEO was making a huge ARSE (literally) of everything, I would also push for him to get the boot....

As for Ross. Let's hope he stays on holiday permanently - or that he's actually being interviewed as Real Mallorca's "Head of PR".

See he is in the papers today telling the world we won't go over 20m Euros for Moutinho... always a good idea to let the other party know your limit when you're negotiating a deal isnt it!! He wants to have a word with Philip Green!

davey/clare - My original posting had a sentence removed, I was in no defending Mr Wyness - I was moaning about a Echo Journalist for not reporting what I believe to be the full story (he was told on Monday that Wyness hadn't resigned, he had). G'OK obviously felt it was inappropriate and removed the sentence.

As for Philip Green.. I would prefer it if he held an official role in the club as opposed to lurking in the shadows and calling the shots (Wyness resigned because of Green's involvement according to the BBC). If someone of his stature was officially involved with EFC then a lot more fans would have faith in the off-the-field management of the club because of his record.

I'm in agreement with you Clare, Ross should also go.

Anon,
I know where you were coming from and I hate editing posts but I can't leave stuff in which is directly having a pop at other Echo journalists.
I've read Mihir Bose's article in the BBC and it's very interesting. Bose has an annoying habit of quoting himself as if he is the oracle, and I doubt his in-depth knowledge (being absed in London etc) but it's still a good piece.
I agree with you about Green. Worryingly the rumour mill now suggests Green wants to end his tacit support of Kenwright.
Never simple being a blue is it?

So Green and Earl are on a Yacht to Wyness.

AJ is in limbo somewhere between Us and fulham.

The Club is up for sale, then it isnt, then it is, then it isnt again.

Uncertain future of moyes.....

It's 2004 all over again, i wouldnt mind having a season like that again, except the bit where you can fluke win without scoring more goals than the oppersition.

Funny how Clare D (Devo) has swanned off to Spain on her hols? Maybe she really is related to Bully?!

Greg, on the whole Mihir Bose (BBC) thing, he as a journalist I will never forget when he described the "39th Game" as a quote: "natural progression".
He's as you say an oracle for big business and comes out with soundbites like that, when really his knowledge of the football culture in England is in my view sadly lacking. He should stick with the Olympics.

As for the Everton angle.
NOT sad to see Wyness go. He's not been diligent on the whole merchandising arm, and as I've written elsewhere, pop into your local JJB Sports store and see the "presence" (or lack thereof) we have relative to the Mancs and the RS with our "Kit Partner". Both have centrally placed larger stands, massive publicised in store.
Evertonians - have to hunt their gear down in the back cupboards.
Where was Wyness's diligence over the deal?

I'm hopefull Robert Elstone will make big strides in improving the situation.
I'm also getting a feeling, investment may pop up in the shape of a billionare/investment group, maybe taking a large stake in the club.
EFC is like one of them snow-globes at the moment. Its a blizzard, and the snow's clearing.... Will be interesting to see the scene when it settles down some.........
