MISERY LOVES COMPANY

Posted by Greg O'Keeffe on August 6, 2008 11:08 AM |

NOBODY does world-weary, 18-carat, feet-dragging misery quite like Evertonians.
Let's face it, we're more than partial to frequent bouts of self-flagellation, doubt and pessimism.

And let's face it, supporting Everton has made us that way in most cases. I'm generally a positive person but trying to apply positive values to the blues can be harder than simultaneous equations.
It makes me laugh when Red mates cry it in about their summer, mumbling about the Gareth Barry deal not being sorted or Rafa's dodgy full-back selection.
They want to try walking in our size nines.
In fact, so do the other 19 clubs in the premier league who have signed a player(s) and been provided with a single grain of optimism.
Anyway, Bill said on Sky yesterday that Moutinho is still in our sights....it's not like we'll now miss out at the last minute as Arsenal do what they did over Aaron Ramsey again is it?
'Course not.
You can just see Wenger loping into a hotel suite in Lisbon now explaining the Arsenal-way to some fat, balding agent holding the Portuguese's leash.
Even ruling out an Arsenal swoop, Spurs definitely need more expensive midfielders.
Who knows? As for Alan Smith, yawn, once again we're split on the teetotal Yorkshireman.
On instinct I'd say a player who last sparkled when Leeds United were good isn't worth any kind of punt, even for £1m. Save it for someone else's wages.
Others at Old Hall Street reckon he has been miscast by United and Newcastle and could prosper again as a grafting partner to The Yak.
I know he's not what I envisaged to help us move on to the next level.
It seems a shame that we're not looking forward to this season more after securing back-to-back European qualification.
It seems a shame that football fans put so much emphasis on the cost of players we buy.
But ultimately we've played the patience game - and seen how our squad struggled to flop over the line for fifth last year.
As the stadium issue gurgles away like a repugnant gargoyle in a cage, we (like our manager) just want to see signs of progression on the pitch.

like it!

yeah, when everyone nseems to be improving, we seem to be standing still.

the stadium issue, wyness, kenwright's latest pronouncements all seem to have put us on hold, and stopped us from bringing in more quality on the pitch.

i still think there's short sightedness from the board and manager.

ok, so we havent got megabucks, yet we're still sniffing round some nobody portuguese player for £15m

what a waste. how about moyes proves what a good manager everyone claims he is and pulls off a few shred deals, wenger style, or leicester city style when o'neill was there.

here's some ideas:
park from man utd
downing from boro
huddleston from spurs
michael johnson from man city
taylor from portsmouth

some of them we'd get for around £6m, maybe get three of them to vastly improve the squad.

lets stop licking the wounds and get out there!
i agree, park would be great. a bit of innovative thinking.
everton are a big club, offer a bit part player at a big club the chance of a starting palce and he'll be tempted.

Blue brother and sisters, if the Board doesn't shape up we're going down. With the stadium called-in, we obviously have no friends in high places (who are Blue and not Red, I mean). Moysey will kick off against Blackburn with half the Everton Ladies team starting....this is so pathetic I can't believe we can't sign even a couple of good journeyman players....Cars, why oh why did you leave us??

I have been a Evertonian for 42 years and I have lived in the US for 23 years travelling back at least 7-8 times a year.
Why do the club treat the supporters who pay the bills this way. Why are we always not along with other clubs strenthning the team.
Please do use money as the excuse, look at Hull, Wigan, Sunderland they are buying players.
I have been so frustrated with the club in the last 6 years

Methinks us Evertonians should show more STOICISM.
"Stoicism teaches the development of self-control and fortitude as a means of overcoming destructive emotions"
- the despair of the past weeks
"A primary aspect of Stoicism involves improving the individual’s ethical and moral well-being"
- I remind myself of just what a big club, a famous club, a historic club Everton is, what a good manager Moyes is, and the fact that we can and shall bring in players before the close of the window.

It makes me feel calm.

"the philosophy holds that becoming a clear and unbiased thinker allows one to understand the universal reason"
- I'm clear that Bill has done his best, but in the modern Premier League; with all this foreign money coming in and with the "Monopoly" money from SKY and UEFA... in order to compete long term we do need a BILLIONARE (or National Capital Investment Group, with Billions), whom is sound in thinking and whom can see what Moyes and Everton FC are. I believe such investment will be forthcoming...

I hold Mr Bradley to account over allowing The RS to build on Stanley Park, and giving us nothing.

Right Now - I couldn't care less about the stadium plan. Don't give evn one shit about it. Short sighted? Maybe - but I'm an Everton fan, not director ... when did we stop thinkin like fans? Cost. Wages. Contracts. Agents. Money. Stadiums. Forget all the hyperbole about "football being a big business now" - it's not. What business is run like football? None - everything is still governed by what happens over 90 minutes on apitch. And that's where our (fans) interests should lay right now - we need quality players to move us forward and unless they're both full of lies, what Moyes and Kenwright have said over the last seven days re. transfers have put my mind at ease. Will we/they got who we want? who know - it's a tough world but I'm glad we've got two of our own in charge ... patience is in short supply these days - but I trust the boss. He'll get it right ... and that's another top 5 finish for us. We've got to keep consolodating until we can really afford to move forward. See - I'm at it now ;-) ...
